How to Clean and Care for Waterproof Dog Gear: Keep Your Collar, Lead and Harness Looking Their Best

Posted by Michelle Andrews on

Beach days, muddy walks and outdoor adventures are all part of life with a dog. But while your four-legged best friend might love getting wet and sandy, their collar, lead and harness need a little care to keep them looking their best.

The good news? Waterproof dog gear is designed to make everyday cleaning easier. With a few simple habits, you can help keep your dog's accessories clean, fresh and ready for the next adventure.

At The Beach Pets, we believe looking after your dog's gear shouldn't be complicated. Here's how to care for your waterproof dog collars, leads and harnesses, including the solid brass fittings that add a beautiful finishing touch.

1. Always rinse after saltwater exposure

If your dog has been swimming in the ocean or exploring along the shoreline, this is the most important step.

Saltwater leaves salt deposits behind as it dries. Combined with sand and moisture, these deposits can affect the appearance of your dog's accessories and may contribute to corrosion or tarnishing of metal hardware over time.

After every beach swim or exposure to saltwater, rinse your dog's collar, hands free lead, hand held lead and harness thoroughly with clean, fresh water.

Pay particular attention to the areas around buckles, clips, rings and other fittings where salt and sand can collect.

A quick rinse helps remove salt residue before it has a chance to build up. It's a simple habit that can make a real difference to the long-term appearance of your dog's walking gear.

2. Wipe down the waterproof material to dry it

One of the advantages of waterproof dog accessories is that the material doesn't absorb water in the same way as many traditional fabric alternatives.

After rinsing, use a clean, soft cloth to wipe down your dog's collar, lead and harness.

This helps remove remaining water, dirt and any loose residue, leaving the material clean and ready for its next outing.

Pay attention to folds, adjustment points and areas where moisture can collect. Allow the gear to air-dry completely before storing it, following the manufacturer's care instructions.

Avoid putting wet accessories away in a closed bag or container, as trapped moisture can affect other components.

3. Give your solid brass fittings extra attention

At The Beach Pets, our solid brass fittings are a beautiful detail on our dog accessories. Like other metal hardware, however, brass benefits from proper care, especially when exposed to saltwater and moisture.

After every exposure to saltwater, rinse the fittings with clean, fresh water and wipe all solid brass fittings thoroughly dry with a soft, clean cloth.

Don't just wipe the visible front of the buckle. Make sure you dry around the edges, underneath the buckle, and any areas where the brass comes into contact with the waterproof material.

Why is this important?

Brass can naturally change colour over time through oxidation and exposure to moisture, salts and other environmental factors. In some circumstances, corrosion or metal residue can also contribute to greenish discolouration on a dog's fur where the hardware makes contact.

Keeping the fittings clean and dry helps minimise residue build-up and can help reduce the likelihood of this happening.

Avoid leaving brass fittings wet after a beach trip, and don't use harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners or metal polishes unless they have been confirmed as suitable for your particular hardware and product. These may damage surrounding materials or affect the finish.

Our simple rule: rinse, wipe and dry every solid brass fitting after saltwater exposure.

4. Remove sand and dirt after outdoor adventures

Sand has a way of finding its way into every little gap, particularly after an enthusiastic beach run.

Once you're home, rinse away loose sand and dirt with fresh water. Use a soft cloth to clean the waterproof material, paying attention to stitching, straps, buckles and clips.

For more stubborn dirt, follow the manufacturer's cleaning instructions rather than reaching for strong detergents or household cleaning products.

Avoid scrubbing with abrasive brushes, which may scratch hardware or damage the surface of the material.

A quick clean after each adventure is generally easier than trying to remove a build-up of dirt later.

5. Check your dog's gear regularly

Cleaning is also a great opportunity to check that everything is still in good condition.

Look over the collar, lead and harness for:

  • Loose stitching, fraying or damaged straps.

  • Cracks, deformation or damage to buckles and clips.

  • Loose or damaged attachment rings.

  • Hardware that no longer fastens or functions securely.

  • Persistent residue or discolouration around metal fittings.

If your dog's gear is damaged or a fastening is no longer secure, stop using it until it can be replaced.

Regular checks are particularly important if your dog swims frequently, enjoys rough outdoor adventures or wears their accessories every day.

6. Store your waterproof dog accessories properly

Once your dog's gear is clean and completely dry, store it somewhere cool and dry, away from prolonged direct sunlight and excessive heat.

Avoid leaving collars, leads and harnesses damp in the car after a beach trip. Heat, trapped moisture and repeated exposure to the elements can affect materials and hardware over time.

A little care between adventures helps keep everything organised and ready to go when it's time for your next walk.

A simple care routine for beach-loving dogs

You don't need an elaborate cleaning routine to look after your dog's waterproof accessories. Just follow these simple steps after a beach outing:

  1. Rinse: Use clean, fresh water to remove saltwater and sand.

  2. Wipe: Wipe down the waterproof material with a clean, soft cloth.

  3. Dry: Thoroughly wipe every solid brass fitting until dry.

  4. Air-dry: Allow the entire accessory to dry completely before storing it.

  5. Inspect: Check buckles, clips, stitching and attachment points before the next use.

Making this routine part of your post-beach ritual helps keep your dog's gear clean, comfortable and looking its best.
